How Leslie Jordan turned Instagram into his greatest showcase of all-things-related-to-music
Leslie Jordan has more than 18.5 million followers on Instagram—and that’s before you count nearly 4,000 of them who follow him exclusively on the platform.
Instagram has become Jordan’s primary tool for showcasing his music, as well as showcasing new and old friends and supporters. The 23-year-old musician and actor has a knack for self-promotion, as his massive following proves.
Before he built his fan base on Instagram, Jordan had no particular style or following. In fact, he was only beginning his music career. “I was playing my guitar every other day when I was about 15 years old,” he told me. “I got a little over-committed at the time. I had a lot of confidence issues. I had anxiety issues. I was just trying to get by on playing.”
For starters, he said, “I was getting frustrated. I didn’t really know what I was doing. Sometimes I could get like 20 or 30 people in a jam.”
But eventually, Jordan found his style. “Just the way my voice sounds — I don’t know — my guitar has a really, really low register,” he said. “I started playing faster. I couldn’t understand what all the lyrics were…I had to relearn what to do in order to be able to write these songs and to know what was cool and what was not so cool.”
From there, Jordan started writing his own songs, and he continued growing his fan base. Jordan said that his favorite moments on Instagram are when he uploads “awesome pictures of me.”
