1 dead, 2 missing in Ontario after being swept away in heavy rains

The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating after two people died after being swept away by heavy downpour in southwestern Ontario.

Police responded to a 911 call at Southwood Mall at 8:18 p.m. Monday about two people downplaying a storm, but an investigation is underway.

Investigators said the two died at the scene and are calling the deaths “suspicious.”

Police have not identified the victims, but police said a man and a woman were believed to be dead.

The OPP said two were declared dead at the scene. One was reported pronounced dead at the hospital. The other was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The rain was so heavy, it started to pour,” said Kevin Brown, who was on the treadmill at Southwood Mall. “It was pouring rain for awhile, and then it just stopped. Then this big gust of wind came, and it pushed the door open. I didn’t hear the first impact, that’s when I realized that something crashed down into the store.”

It is believed that the woman who was pronounced dead at the scene was pregnant and that the man who was killed was the owner’s brother-in-law, police said.
